Contraindications

Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE: LLY) today announced that it has entered into an agreement with Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (NYSE: TEV) to market Nexium® and its generic version of esomeprazole (Nexium) and a new generic equivalent to esomeprazole magnesium (Nexium). The agreement provides Teva with exclusive marketing rights to the drug for the treatment of gastric reflux disease (GERD) and for the treatment of esophageal cancer.
Nexium® is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that provides an effective and long-lasting relief from symptoms of GERD and other related chronic symptoms. It works by inhibiting acid production in the stomach.
In addition to the generic, Nexium® is also available as a branded and generic product.
Nexium® has been approved by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and for the treatment of esophageal cancer. The company has also received additional regulatory approvals for other GERD-related treatments and other indications in the U. including heartburn treatment, acid reflux and GERD prevention, and prevention of acid reflux.
A generic version of Nexium is approved for the treatment of GERD, esophageal cancer and certain other conditions.
A new generic version of Nexium is expected to be available sometime in the fourth quarter of 2007, effective in the U. beginning in November 2009. The launch of Nexium® also includes the generic equivalent of Esomeprazole magnesium (Nexium) and a new product called Nexium®. The generic is indicated for the treatment of GERD in patients over the age of 65 and the prevention of esophageal cancer following previous treatment for GERD.
